I Looked Up

my feet slipped over the river worn, round stones
too focused on the small mountains my body was tense
until I looked up
to my right a fluorescent yellow flutter in a tucked away pool
cleaning himself in the wake of the sun
to my front pebble look-a-likes with legs fluttered franticly
as if I were a predator
in the distance silhouettes of a family, bills and curled tails
making the most what the shallow waters have to offer

my focus shifted, my body calmed
the details of the river balanced me
the sun warmed my soul
the current calmed my heart
the cold stream flowing over my feet
connected me to the spirit of the earth
a thousand stories
waiting for me
to look up and find them
