to me, to you

I celebrate myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.

These are the first three lines in Song of Myself by Walt Whitman.  His words in this poem go on to twist and turn .  If you’ve never read it, you may want to.  It’s very interesting and very beautiful.

When I read that line…

For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.

I just found it so breathtaking.  I thought of love and how it is available to everyone.  It’s not as if one person gets love and another doesn’t.  Love belongs to me as much as it belongs to you.

The painting below is my simple interpretation of that.  We learned a new technique in the A Year of Painting class I am taking with Alena Hennessy.  Alena taught us how to use a masquepen which creates the white spaces you see below.
